This week the DSP’s Rupert Brown continues his interview with Music Tech Mag’s tutorial writer Mike Hillier, in this concluding part.

Mike Hillier is a freelance sound engineer and music technology journalist, based in London, UK. His magazine work includes various positions at Music Tech Magazine since 2004, including News and Reviews Editor.

As an engineer, Mike begun at the Metropolis Studios in London, where he has worked with artists as diverse as Eminem, Rihanna and Scott Walker.  Plus has production credits with artists such as Westlife, McFly, Natasha Hamilton and La Roux.

Working with Music Tech Magazine keeps Mike at the cutting edge of music technology, enabling him to bring some of the newest hardware and software to bear on projects.

LoopTV – The Music Producers Channel

Paul Frankland, aka Woob is among the most acclaimed ambient musicians of his generation and has created several milestones of the genre, including the well loved Woob 1194 and Woob 4495 albums on the late Nottingham-based em:t label.

If you like great evocative, cinematic ambient music combining organic elements with world and dub influences, check out his latest album, ‘Repurpose’.

This short video takes an intensely stylised look at the X50i a custom built spring reverb (circa 1988).  The soundtrack is comprised of sounds processed with the unit as-well as those of hitting scraping brushing and combing the reverb springs, combined with additional processing and sound design.

LoopTV – The Music Producers Channel

Starting out in the late 90s garage scene, Nick Deekline’s history as a producer stretches way back, but as the UK’s bass-driven scenes morphed into new and exciting sounds, Deekline became known within breakbeat circles for his cult label Rat Records, and for his duo, Deekline & Wizard.

Healey on the other hand, came from the other side of the galaxy, dominating charts and DJ playlists with his filthy, electro house beats as one half of Coburn before eventually teaming up with Nick.

Now the pair’s new label Giant Pussy Records combines all of Deekline and Healey’s breaks, house and dubstep influences, and as Tim sums it up, ‘It’s a vault of sleaze, trash, and bass’.

LoopTV recently caught up with the duo and special guests at their first year bash, to help celebrate their first year of Giant Pussy!  We asked them to reflect on a year in ghetto, and spill the beans on whats coming up!

AIR Mastering located within the confines of AIR Studios and is the newest division of the AIR Lyndhurst group. It builds upon over 40 years of experience in providing high end audio to world’s music industry. Established and headed up by MPG award winning mastering engineer Ray Staff and former Alchemy engineer Matt Colton.

Between them they have worked with artists including Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Clash and Black Sabbath. Most recently Ray has mastered albums for Muse and Corinne Bailey Rae.

Here Ray talks about the modern Mastering engineers role and offers some tips on how to best prepare your  audio for the mastering process. Along with some advice on why exporting mono Left and Right audio files over stereo interleaved can yield better audio fidelity.

LoopTV – The Music Producers Channel

Brighton based Loopmasters first came to light in 1999 under the ‘Beatnik Samples’ banner, and released 4 Sample CDs known as the ‘Modular Series’ to critical acclaim, but it wasn’t until early 2003 that the current Loopmasters brand was officially launched.

Their aim was simply to produce flexible sample libraries for producers and musicians who required top quality playing from seasoned professioanls to integrate into and inspire their music.

Loopmasters now a byword for quality, value and flexibility has since gone from strength to strength by constantly re-examining producers needs, and redefining genres and formats to accommodate and inspire producers.  It was the first company in its class to launch an Artist Series, and more recently the Label Series.

We catch with some of the labels Artists to find out the secret behind one of the Sample industries most enduring successes.
